Real wood furniture is the most popular furniture in
existence. It’s been around for hundreds of years and
probably existed when the cave humans got tired of squatting
on the dirt floor of their caves and looked around for a
better way.
The woods that are fashioned into furniture fall into three
categories:
1. Hardwoods
2. Softwoods
3. Composites
Even the term ‘hardwood’ or ‘softwood’ is deceptive.
Hardwoods aren’t inevitably harder, denser material. For
example, balsa wood is one of the lightest, least dense
woods there is, and it’s considered a hardwood. Technically,
lumber is classified based on how the tree reproduces. As a
general rule, though, softwood trees are evergreen year
round while the hardwoods manufacture the finelooking autumn foliage
that we all love so much.
Hardwoods are considered the most eminent quality and are the
most expensive. Their natural colors vary from the darkest
woods to the lightest ones and and they may be stained or
painted for even more variety. Hardwood furniture is least
likely to warp or bend and is prized in all high quality
homes. The five woods most commonly applied in furniture
production are cherry, walnut, oak, maple and mahogany.
Softwoods are less pricey than hardwoods, but they
require extra care. Because they are less durable, it’s much
easier to scratch or dent softwood furniture. In addition,
they oftentimes don’t have the beauteous grains of a hardwood,
and accordingly don’t stain as beautifully.
Pine is an example of a softwood that is normally applied for
furniture. These woods are ofttimes employed in construction as
well so the choicest pieces are reserved for furniture. In
construction, knots and splits are common. Lots of
construction lumber will not receive paint and this kind of
wood is applied for shelves or packing crates.
The softwood employed in furniture is indicated as “Appearance”
lumber and includes most softwood lumber that has been
custom milled to a pattern or other than as supposed or expected surfaced on all four
sides.
Composites are the most inexpensive form of wood and are literally
manufactured, rather than grown.
1. Plywood: multiple layers of thin wooden sheets are glued
together and pressed. Plywood is strong and resists
swelling, shrinking and warping. There is galore furniture
made directly from plywood, but in general it is only employed as
a aid when integrated into furniture.
2. Particle board: sawdust and little wood chips are mixed
with glue or resin which is then shaped and pressure
treated. When used for inexpensive furniture, particle board
is ordinarily covered with laminate or veneer. This is
necessary because particle board splits effortlessly and the
laminate prevents splitting. However, the downside is that
the laminate may discerned from the wood because the particle
board responds to temperature and pressure changes by
swelling and shrinking.
3. Hardboard: is made like particle board but it’s placed
under higher pressure so it’s stronger.
4. MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard: wood corpuscles are
bonded with resin and compressed. It is harder than particle
board or hardboard, and may be cut like plywood altho it
isn’t as strong as plywood. Some MDF is covered with
melamine which is a lasting plastic in a potpourri of colors.
The exposed edges of MDF are rough and need covering with
molding or a good deal of other ornamental material.
Technically, furniture made from all of these wood products
is “real” wood furniture, even the composites. Prices and
quality range from the hardwoods down to the composites.
The higher you go up the spectrum, the more you may expect
to remunerate for your wood furniture. The good part, of course,
is that with proper care hardwood furniture will last for
decades or even generations. If you may afford it, always
choose hardwood furniture.

Nice for the price.
By Mom of 3
Updated since this review. See additional posts. Sharp looking with the shiny chrome look and black seat. Looks great in a stainless steel kitchen. It does not say it but these seats have a maximum weight of 200 lbs. so my husband cannot use them. They go up and down, but it depends on your weight. I am 115lbs. and I can go down not up. My Daughter is 48lbs. and can only go up. Still a deal but keep the weight restriction in mind if you want everyone to use them.

Great Buy! = Happy Consumer
By A. Allen
For what I’ve priced for one stool, I got two of them! Plus, these are adjustable, which is a welcome bonus. They aren’t bulky at all, so they fit nicely under the edge of my counter to be completely out of the way. There is some padding, but not very much, definitely moreso than a plain old wooden stool. I think I’ll buy another pair to go downstairs at my work bench and in my shop.
And here is my favorite part, you can spin around on one like a hundred times, and then try to pin the tail on the donkey, so you might want to use velcro instead of actual pins.

Great stools.
By J. R. Napier
I needed a few my chairs for my apartment I saw these and thought “what the heck.”
I bought em’ and when they arrived I was very pleased, they where easy to assemble and look great in my appartment. Kind of a post-modern sleak sexy look. Not only do they look good but they are comfortable to sit in.
I’ve already gotten complements on them, so I am pleased.

Great value for the money
By William Aaron
Ordered six of these to use as chairs with an antique dining room table we picked up sort of unexpectedly — they arrived quickly and were all in great shape — look terrific, feel solid, and they’re a great value for the price.

their ok
By L. Doronzo
The chairs arrived all together. We only had to take off the plastic. Looking over the chairs they could of used better wooden legs. One of the chairs had a chunk of wood chipped out but they painted over so it blends in. Over all they are decent for the price.
